The Alton Benes character is based on the novelist/shrty story writer Richard Yates. According to the Yates biography, A Tragic Honesty by Blake Bailey, Larry David was friends with one of Yate's daughter and the jacket incident really happened (tho' not exactly as depicted)! Yates, whose travials with alcoholism, mental breakdowns and general life difficulties was quite ill when the episode aired, but seemed to enjoy it. Unlike Benes, who seems to be depicted as a Mickey Spillaine type, Yates was the classic writer of 50's suburban despair--Revolutionary Road is considered his masterpiece.

What was that tune he was humming in his car at the end of the episode? I think it was from Les Miserables... George had been singing it earlier...
