Ok, this is the worst thread i've ever started, but it's to buy Curb DVD's so i think it qualifies as a relevant subject (who am i kidding?)

Anyway, i went on Amazon.com to see if i could get that $30 off that Rio mentioned, but found out it's only for US residents.

So I forgot about that and checked the prices for the first 3 seasons of Curb and it was on sale for:

83.49 $US -->New (direct from Amazon)
63.12 $US -->New (from a seller)

On Amazon.ca (Canada's version)

It was on sale for:
113.57 $CDN --> New (direct from Amazon)
88.53 $CDN --> New (from a seller)

Even with the exchange rate, Amazon.com offers a better deal than Amazon.ca

Which is f*cked up! You'd think that they would be able to keep things consistent.

they're rarely consistent. i often order from amazon.com because their overseas shipping speed is exponentially faster. often with the exchange, prices are about the same, but sometimes you will find them significantly cheaper on one or the other. ie: as an obsessed poker player, i love the travel channel's world poker tour. i got season two through amazon.com for about $35.00 USD. then when i went to order season one, it was $78.00 USD on amazon.com and $39.00 CAD on amazon.ca.

the world is a strange place sometimes.

Wow, Jimmy really puts things in perspective. Nevertheless, he has a point.

Gack (or anyone else), what about Asian imports? I can get the Hong Kong imports for considerably less, but do you know if they are playable in North American DVD players? And do you think they would be exactly the same (with all the special features included?)

Has anyone ever bought imported DVD's? Do you know where i can find info on DVD's from Asia? I'm very conflicted...

it depends on whether you're looking for imported bootlegs (you can buy bootlegs, of almost anything that's been theatrically released, on the streets in seoul, and buy them with impunity... still haven't found any copies of "cry cry again") or if you want the genuine article.

if you're interested in getting legitimate dvds, you can get virtually any title in release. with televison dvds, however, i've found that unless it's a series that is insanely popular (see: seinfeld, smallville, e.r., etc) certain titles can be hard to find.

that said, yes, they're exactly like north american versions when it comes to special features and whatnot. the only differences you will find are in the text on the dvd cases and sometimes the dvd menus themselves (the difference being, it's in the language of the country you got it from.)

however, you have to be careful. any dvds your purchase outside of north america will not play in north american-made dvd players, unless you have a region-free player. there are eight different region codes, with the US and canada being code 1, and east asia and southeast asia (where i am at the moment) being code 3. i bought a region-free player for about a hundred bucks in seoul, and i have not had a single problem with playing any of my region 1 dvds that i brought with me from canada.

also, you need to watch for RCE, which is regional coding enhancement, a little feature they add to some dvds to prevent them from working even in region-free players. columbia/tristar (which is the "seinfeld" distributor) apparently is adding RCE to most of their titles. season 4 of "seinfeld," which i got through amazon.com, allegedly has RCE, but it plays just fine in my region-free player.

to sum up:

if you want asian imports, or imports from any country outside the US/Canada, you will need to buy a region-free dvd player, and even if you do have a region-free player, it is possible you might still get screwed by RCE. far as i am concerned, unless it's a title you can't find anywhere else, and you NEED to get an import, it's really not worth the hassle. there's a whole subculture of korean/chinese/japanese bootlegging, which will save you loads of cash, but if you want the real thing (which i usually do), you won't find much difference in price. besides, you'll pay out the ass for shipping/handling.

Something changed here-- hey Jimmy, are you on an "opposite" kick or something? Chicken salad on rye... and a cup of tea?
