Recently I was watching The Strong Box, and noticed that Phil's apartment number was 5E. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that Newman's? Now originally I guessed that Newman and Jerry lived on seperate floors, but in the series there is never a mention to what floor Jerry lives on when someone asked where the apartment is. Can anyone sort out this confusion for me?

I don't think that was the question.

I think it is interesting that the numbers are 5 numbers but I remember watching an episode where Jerry mentioned they were on the 10th floor.

I think Newman lives on the same floor. Notice how the access to his apartment is so easy for Kramer. Once, when Jerry goes to Newman's to confront him about something, he walks no more than about 8 seconds before he is at Newman's door.

Do we actually see Jerry walk all the way to Newman's unedited? Because if what we "see" is the actual timeline, then India must only be about a two or three minute flight from New York!

well i was under the impression that the 5 indicated what floor their apartment was on but i could be wrong

phil lived like three doors down from jerry if that helps, you could see them in the same shot

Newman's apartment is 5E, they used the same door or number to make Phil's apartment door, maybe because it was the last season they didn't want to make new stuff for the set and just reused Newman's and hoped nobody would care.

lovin' every minute of it

There was also a woman living in 5E in I believe The Conversion episode. She was watching over the apartment for her friend (not Newman.) She had a cat with a fungus and Jerry thought she was the one with the fungus after finding the medication in the medicine cabinet.

I believe that Newman lives on the 5th floor with Kramer and Jerry, but on a different wing of the building. He is 5E

I think every appartment on the 5th floor is 5E, besides Jerry's and Kramer's.

The appartment numbers are messed up a lot. Jerry had no number, then 3A for a few episodes. Gena from The Suicide lived in 5D. Jerry's girlfriend from The Conversion lived in 5E which is seen to be in a different location than Phil from The Strong Box who also lived in 5E. We all know that Newman lives in 5E, though in The Doodle we see him in 5F.

The funny thing is that one of the first things I remember reading when I discovered this site is that "Larry David is a stickler for detail". This, and many other examples, are proof that some of the most basic "details" were totally overlooked. That doesn't take away from the fact this is still probably the greatest sitcom in the history of the world. But I still am surprised that nobody on the set (actors, directors, producers, writers, extras, etc...) wouldn't notice something like an apt#. I mean, it's not like someone not noticing that flowers have grown in a garden...Some prop guy had to actually put the apt.#'s up. Weird, wild stuff.

I agree, they show apartment numbers 5A - 5G at some point (many just in the background) but you figure they could spare the extra $3 to buy a different number for a new character.

well in the sponge kramer arrives at jerry's appartment out of breath and says he walked up five flights of stairs

so that would mean he is on the sixth floor unless they don't count the lobby as the first floor
