8. Master and Commander
9. Gangs of New York
10. The Aviator
11. Ben-Hur
12. The Godfather, pt. 2

interesting. if i made a list, there'd be some crossovers with yours, though *stress* in my opinion, films like 'vertigo,' 'godfather 2,' and '8 1/2' could never really be overrated, since they're some of the absolute best films ever made. (though as any true 'godfather' fan knows, the original was the best in the trilogy.)
and i'd have to argue that 'gangs of new york' was anything but overrated. not because it was so great (it was pretty good, but we're talking scorsese here, people, and the man has made some CLASSICS), but because it really didn't get that much attention. i think while it was being made, there was this impression that it could be marty's best film to date, and then when it hit theatres, people either a) forgot about it, or b) comapred it to his previous body of work and said it wasn't nearly as good as it should have been. (much like i just did above.)
'gladiator' was hugely overrated. that it defeated 'traffic' i will never understand. so was 'master and commander,' while i'm on it.
'star wars' is important, obviously, but 'empire' was the best of the bunch.
'the passion'? meh. i mean, i've never been a religious person of any denomination, but i understood what gibson was trying to do. all the same, watching a guy get the crap kicked out of him for two hours just isn't my thing.
and i think the whole 'rings' trilogy was overrated. they're good films. impressive films. but not great films. i think that trilogy was rewarded more for the means than the end. |

Yes, fodder for thought. I do like my list better than Premiere magazine's.
Gangs of New York is overrated because it won 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It wasn't Best Picture material any more than The Aviator or Rob Reiner's Cruisefest, A Few Good Men. (You wanna see great and realistic courtroom drama, watch Anatomy of a Murder and Witness For the Prosecution.)
The Godfather2 was terrific, but Chinatown, from the same year, was, and still is, better, and on that basis alone, G2 is overrated.
I rank Vertigo below North By Northwest, Psycho, and Rear Window. I liked Vertigo very much, but I liked Biloxi Blues even better, and neither one deserves to be mentioned with movies like Chinatown, Pulp Fiction, Fargo, The Graduate, Dr. Strangelove, The Godfather, Citizen Cane, Raging Bull, Casablanca, Grand Illusion, and fifty other movies I'd rank ahead of them. IMO, of course.
And I forgot to add-in Caddyshack, Rain Man, and I'll throw-in A Few Good Men just to make it a nice, round 20. |

meh. 'gangs' was nominated for ten, but it won exactly zero oscars. not one. 'chicago' had it sewn up the day the nominations were announced, much like 'titanic,' 'forrest gump,' and 'return of the king.' 'gangs' is the kind of movie that the academy loves because it's big, epic, well directed, historical. they love historical. but it was better than 'chicago,' it was better than 'the hours,' and it was better than 'the two towers.' all it was NOT better than was 'the pianist.' and day-lewis most definately should have won best actor. in ten years, no one is going to remember 'gangs,' whereas with most quote-unquote great (see: overrated) films, they live on and on and on, and for no good reason.
'godfather 2' and 'chinatown.' i'd need a gun against my head to pick between the two.
and for me, 'vertigo' is hitchcock's best film. ever. period.
careful bookie. you're going to have me making my own list soon. not because i want to argue (in fact, it's nice knowing there's someone on this board who seems at least as much into films as i am) but because i get all enthusiastic about things like this. |

Last new movie Jimmy saw was Fahrenheit 911. Before that was Star Wars II.
Do they still have movie theaters?

im from Argentina, (no, i don't know where the soup nazi is btw), and speaking for the people on the other side of the globe, i believe movies like 8 1/2, 2001, citizen kane, and alikes couldn't be overrated because they changed the way films were made, all over the world.
How Godfather 2 showed the mafia in a realistic way, philosophy, pasta recepies!..And in 2001, the makeup in the apes, the music controlling the rhythm, all the questions left to the audience's interpretation...i mean, k'mon!!! they are all outstanding and unique.
Sorry, i also get all enthusiastic talkin about these things. |

What about Sack Lunch? C'mon people, look at the poster... It's a family in a brown paper bag. Don't you wanna know how they got in there? Do you think they got shrunk down, or is it just a giant sack? |

the perfect pizza should be about a half an inch thick, on a super thin crust, with a little sauce, scattered cheese, various herbs and spices (ie: oregano) and one to two toppings max. it should be crispy on the outside, soft and melty on the inside. you should not be able to fold it like a piece of paper, nor should you have to have trouble getting your mouth around it. loaded pizzas are sloppy and ridiculous.
thoughts? |

Like sex, there is no bad pizza. It could be served at the finest restaurant in all of italy, and cost $1,000 per slice.... or it could be the Chef Boyardee mix out of the box..... love 'em all! What is with these people that say there is such a thing as bad pizza? It's bread, it's sauce... shut up and inhale already!
Pizza's the best! The best, Gack!.... The best! |

It's best if you let people make it themselves...however, you can't have people shoving their arms into a 500 degree oven! |

Thin crust, not too much cheese, plenty of fresh garlic, don't forget the olive oil and basil. No other toppings necessary. |

I'm on no sleep. I've slept maybe six hours in the last two weeks. And I've been a cranky old man since I was 20. A dangerous combination...........
I'm no longer putting up with the little BS that people endure in silence, out of some don't-sweat-the-small-stuff or don't-make-a-scene ethos. I was in the express lane at the grocery store yesterday. The lady in front of me had far more than 10 items. I stepped up right behind her so my mouth was about three inches from her right ear, and as the checker removed the items from her basket one-by-one, I counted them out--loudly--for everyone to hear. She had sixteen friggin items. What--she could count? Bullsh--. She just thought nobody'd call her on it..........
I got into an argument at a dog show recently. (My wife and I attend dog shows. All the fun of dogs without the smell, the hair, and the doodoo.) Dog breeders unashamedly call female dogs "bitches." What the f*ck? They can't come up with another word? I like to throw "bitch" around, loudly, at these shows. "That's a nice-lookin' bitch ya got there." "Look at the legs on that bitch. I really love the bitches, etc., etc. Finally, a guy called me on it. He knew what I was up to. He said "dog" has always referred to males and females have always been bitches. Oh yeah? Then why isn't it the Westminster Kennel Club Dog and Bitch Show? Bitches compete there too, ya know. Do you not call it the Westminster ... Dog and Bitch Show because there's something wrong with saying bitch bitch bitch right and left on TV? I said, Why don't we just call the males "pricks." That'd be fair. The Westminster Kennel Club Prick and Bitch Show. He looked at me like I was out of my mind.........
The days of me puttin'up with BS are over and the days of me doing something about it have just begun.

One more movie thing, Gack. I don't consider myself as having returned the favor unless I recommend a movie you haven't seen.
You've seen Secretary. Scratch that. How 'bout Sex & Lucia (uncut), or two older US movies--Bad Day at Black Rock, or Sweet Smell of Success? |

The people who have more than ten items at a "ten items or less" checkout aren't the problem. The cashiers who ring them up are the problem. They should be burned alive! if people are allowed to get away with things, then why shouldn't they continue to do those things?
Jimmy's never, ever once had an overhead compartment on an airplane. NEVER! But people with two F**KIN' baby carriages, four bags of souvenirs, and three Pokemon duffle bags get all the compartments they f**kin need! Why shouldn't they? If they can get them, they should take them and to hell with everybody else! But then the flight attendants should be burned alive afterwards for not limiting one compartment per passenger! |
