Are you kidding? Obviously you're entitled to your opinion, and so if you didn't think she was funny, then I'm not going to argue with you. But to describe Julia Louis-Dreyfus's acting as "wooden"...I'm sorry I just find that wholly inaccurate. She's actually quite animated.

One of the things we get to see in Season 4 (which we now have on DVD) is the emergence of Julia as a terrific physical comedienne. She's grossly underrated, which we should expect, having worked in the shadow of one of the all-time greats. But while Michael Richards gets well-deserved credit for all his shtick, Julia gets no credit whatever for hers. It's so much more than the get-out shove.

I especially like the cough/stutter when she lies or says something uncomfortable or embarrassing. I enjoy her facial expressions. Watch the look on her face when Kramer convinces her that Dr. Reston would want to hear how often they "do it." Watch her expression when it begins to dawn on her that Jimmy is the other guy. Look at her face when she opens that bathroom door on the airplane or when she says, "Oh, they've got cookies." And the body English Julia adds to so many of her lines.

So much of what Julia does is so fused with the Elaine character that, unfairly, her shtick almost disappears.

Yes, it took me a while to become an Elaine fan when I first started watching the show, but I appreciate her alot more now. However, to me, and I might get a lot of crap for this, she's still the one I'd miss the least if she wasn't on the show. I do like her character alot more now than I did when I first started watching.
There's only one little part of a scene that still makes me cringe because I find it totally over-done. When she goes to the Andover Shop with Jerry and Craig says he needs Jerry's number on the back of the cheque, then he says to Elaine "and perhaps you can give me your number too"...Her reaction to that as the scene fades out is way too much. She laughs a sort of shy laugh, but it's so over-acted to me and goes on for way too long that it still bothers me every time I see it.

I agree with you, Gendison. Julia had her low spots. And, yes, of the four, she's the least integral. I just think her work on Seinfeld goes almost unnoticed. And you can see her panties in The Busboy when she's packing that guy's suitcase, so that makes up for a lot.

You're right about how under-appreciated she is. Though, I guess one can argue there's a reason for that. She certainly paid her dues. I remember seeing her on SNL way before Seinfeld, so she has been around and nobody can accuse her of coming out of nowhere.
Also, I know this shouldn't affect my opinion of her acting, but after hearing how little she remembers about the show during the commentaries, and the fact that all she could freaking "comment" on was whether she was pregnant or not really got on my nerves. She sort of reminds me of Tina Louise who was known for playing Ginger on "Gilligan's Island". It's the only good thing she ever did, yet she comes off like she's trying to get people to forget it and take her as a "serious" actress. Get over it, you will always be Elaine and that's that. Take your million dollars an episode and shut up.

Fortunately for me, I suppose, I never saw her on SNL. I'd stopped watching it when Bill Murray left. So when I saw her in Seinfeld originally, and as I saw her develop on that show, I could judge her without preconceived ideas.

I'm very diappointed with her work on the commentaries. However, it doesn't affect my evaluation of her acting work on the show. I'd give Richards and Alexander A grades for their work. I'd give Jerry a C+/B–, and I'd give Julia a B+, instead of the C or "Incomplete" she seems to get from the universal absence of praise.

Wow.... Jimmy so disagrees with Elaine being the least important. We've said a million times here, how it takes all four to make the show, but Jimmy has said it before and will say it again.... George and Elaine could've had a successful show with just the two of them. Maybe not at the level of Seinfeld, but a successful show, nonetheless. Jerry and Kramer together? Don't think so. George and Elaine are, without a doubt, the "acting" and "character" foundation of the show. Jerry's needed for his writing and his outlandish ideas. Kramer is needed for those who don't get the lines and need to see someone falling down a lot and making incoherent verbal noises. No, Jimmy's not saying that's all Jerry and Kramer are good for... just in a general, overall sense.

She's the Paul McCartney of Seinfeld, and George is the John Lennon. Jerry is George Harrison and Kramer is Ringo.

Well, it's all subjective, but I find myslef fast-forwarding "Elaine" scenes much more than anyone else. I find she terribly over-acts. I don't think the show would have gone ANYWHERE without Kramer. for 2 reasons: The average sit-com-watching idiot loves him for his "antics"...And the more intelligent audience appreciates that he adds so much to the show with the stuff the average idiot doesn't even notice...did that make sense???
