Three Stars of 'Seinfeld' Boycott a DVD Deal

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 22 — Three of the four leading cast members of the hit television comedy "Seinfeld" are declining to participate in the making of a DVD series of the show because they are unhappy with the related financial deals they have had over the years, people close to the actors and the show said on Monday.

These people said that the three actors — Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who played Elaine; Michael Richards, who played Kramer; and Jason Alexander, who played George — made the joint decision not to give on-camera interviews for the DVD or otherwise participate in it.

Thanks, Jose. Funny, I was just posting the same article (at the same time as you). I am starting a new section on this site for DVD News and Rumors. Look for it soon.

It's sad that money issues will take away from the features on the DVD. On the positive side, an article in the NY Times lends support to the prediction that we will see a Seinfeld DVD release in 2004.

I have read a couple of articles on this topic today and the NY Times one seems to leave a glimmer of hope that they may still come to an agreement. I can kinda see both side's POV, but I feel that the cast deserves much more than a "recording fee" for the DVD set.

That's an insult, IMO. If they release these DVDs without extras including the participation of the entire supporting cast then I will be buying it under protest. It'll be a fairly silent protest, but a protest non-the-less.

And, I agree with Stan...this pretty much confirms that we'll be seeing Seinfeld DVDs in our stockings next Christmas!

I took the gamble and plunged $2?? on eBay for the 23 disk set. I got them all and they all worked, even though the seller copied them on Princo DVDs that are less than a buck a piece. I have a DVD burner and backed them all up because we watch them over and over. We must be on our 10th cycle by now. My wife and I can't sleep without them. I'll buy the released DVDs when they come out for the extras, too. Sorry to all that have to yell out SERENITY NOW! BTW, I was shocked when my wife pointed out that Jerry's girlfriend that was a masseuse(?) is Stiffler's mom on American Pie. She was a lot younger and slimmer and hotter. Still hot, but totally different.

`Seinfeld' stars divided over DVD deal
Richards to take part.
Other co-stars say they won't grant interviews

By Sharon Waxman
New York Times

Michael Richards, a star of the hit television comedy Seinfeld, said he will take part in the making of a DVD of the series, but he said he ought to be paid for it.

People close to Richards and his co-stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Jason Alexander said on Monday that the actors had decided not to grant interviews for the DVD because they were unhappy with the financial deals they have had with the show over the years.

``I'm not boycotting,'' Richards, who played Kramer in the series, said in a telephone interview late Monday night. ``I'm involved. I was never called to do an interview. I am so for the DVD coming out that I'll go on the Tonight show.''

But Richards said he thought he ought to be paid for taking part in the DVD project, in part because the show has been such a windfall for its creators, producers and distributors: Jerry Seinfeld, Larry David, Castle Rock Television and Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment. They will all share profits from the DVD.

Actors do not typically receive residual payments for DVDs, but this is quickly becoming a major issue in Hollywood, as DVD sales now bring in millions of dollars to those who control the rights to hit television shows and movies, far more than revenue from videocassettes.

Richards said: ``I innocently asked a question: Is there some compensation? I don't believe there is. There isn't anything.''

He added, ``I think everyone wants to get paid,'' referring to his co-stars. ``Is it honorable for those on the inside to make compensation? That's an ethical question they have to deal with. But I never heard back from anybody.''

Seinfeld and Richards spoke together Tuesday to mend fences. A spokeswoman for Seinfeld said: ``Jerry and the other producers are profit participants of the Seinfeld show and do not control the ancillary stream of revenue. The owner is Warner Brothers, and Sony controls the syndication rights, which includes DVD sales.''

Louis-Dreyfus and Alexander could not be reached for comment, their representatives said.

Richards said that he had spoken to Louis-Dreyfus on Monday and that she was noncommittal about taking part in the DVD.

Seinfeld, which ran from 1990 to 1998, remains one of the most successful comedy shows in television history and still plays in syndication across much of the country. The DVD of the show would seem destined to sell millions of copies.

Discontent over the sharing of the Seinfeld riches has arisen with Seinfeld's three co-stars before. In the last few years of the show the actors had sought to become part owners of the show, like Seinfeld.

They famously sought $1 million an episode for the last year of the show, 1998, in part because they said they thought they had been underpaid for many seasons. They ended up with about $600,000 a show, then a whopping sum for television.

Castle Rock is working on the DVD of the first Seinfeld season, aiming to release it in December 2004. Plans call for the eventual release of all nine seasons.

Well, By the sound of things it will be about never before the DVD sets are released in Britain. In the mean time I'll have to continue downloading poor quality episodes from Kazaa. Why BBC2 don't show it is beyond me. They put it on a few years ago but at about Midnight. It could be one of their best rating shows. The Seinfeld fans of britain can't even speak out as we are a minority!!

My only saving grace is that I managed to find a code on the net to make my DVD player multi-region so I can buy the USA DVD's over the net once they are released.

UK Viewers.

Paramount Comedy show one episode a day on their two channels repeated two or three times. The catch is that BBC 2 are sitting on seasons 5 and 6 which Paramount don't have.

Could anyone help me out by renting me a watchable copy of these 2 seasons in the UK?

Hey! If you are tired of downloading "Seinfeld" episodes off Kazaa, then try bittorrent. It works great! I have downloaded a couple of Seinfeld episodes, but am holding off on getting a lot. I'd rather wait for the real deal to be released later this year (Season 1 and possibly 2) and the rest soon (hopefully) afterwards.

Go here:

http://suprnova.org/

Click on "TV Shows" at the top, and "Seinfeld" has it's own section on that page.

Good luck and let me know how it turns out for you.

If any of you are still looking for Martin Jacob he's involved with Sienfeldmedia.com.

martinjacob@rogers.com

Unfortunately I ordered the DVDs from them before checking this site.

I do know they've been shipped, as FedEx has scanned them at their sort facility in Toronto on the 11th and should arrive tomorrow.

But beware, just because there's a tracking number for FedEx doesn't mean FedEx HAS the package. The tracking number is only a number/lable generated by the SHIPPER and entered into the FedEx system with a probable delivery date.

But that means nothing until FedEx takes the package and scans it.

Only when the package is SCANNED at a FedEx facility can you be assured it's actually on the way. (Found this out after the original delivery date of 1/8 came and went without the DVDs.)

The set supposedly contains 80+ minutes of outtakes.

I'll be back tomorrow or Thursday with more info.

I received the full 9 seasons (24 bootlegged Seinfeld discs) this morning. The 88 minutes of out takes was also included.

If you need to order the DVDs be sure to use a credit card where you can, possibly, get your money back should the website move again.

Considering the official release of season #1 won't be out for about a year it was worth the bucks I put out for the full 9 seasons now.

From the limited viewing I've done so far it appears the shows were taped from TBS.

The episode you are thinking of is 'The Muffin Tops' from season 8. But it is not the puerto rican who stole elains armour, it's the guy who owned the Jiffy Park in 'The Wig Master'.

Man: It doesn't look like garbage.

Kramer: Well it's muffin stumps

Man: Where are the muffin tops?

Kramer: This is a garbage dump. Just let me dump it.

Man: Can't do it.

Kramer: Is this a joke?

Man: That's what I'd like to know about it.

I didnt mean the guy who stole it from her house, I mean the guy who stole it from Kramer on the streel. But you got the line, right, I almost fell of my chair just now reading it. Thanks guys, I knew someone would come through. This is the greatest show ever, they must get the DVD out. I just bought a set on the internet, it actually came with blooper/outtake DVD. But im sure the official release will be better.

Thanks
