George gets upset that Jerry entrusted Elaine to get his mail. To avoid conflict, Jerry quickly gives George the important job of flushing his toilets twice a day so the gaskets won't dry out and leak. George then feels better by having, what he feels is, a "bigger responsibilty" than Elaine. Toilets are everything to George.
