I believe a "hipster doofus" may have gotten its roots from Norman Mailer's idea of the ideal human being. According to him, a "hipster" is someone who lives his life believing that death is only a heartbeat away; he believes anything can happen in an instant-- and doesn't care. Because death or pain is imminent, the hipster nonchalantly welcomes it, is aware of it, but is never fully expectant of it. Instead, the hipster lives life to the fullest, makes use of his talents but seldom uses it for personal gain, since he is aware that the end lingers around the corner anyway. Being a doofus is being silly, aloof, extraordinary. Hence, we have that eccentric and comical antihero: Cosmo Kramer.
