While the specific answer is certainly in depth (maybe never to be answered?) I think that generally it's clear that Elaine, like the other characters is as intricately hapless as any of them. The last episode said it all, four people with one big thing in common: the never get what they think they have coming to them (usually at the price of others) but they all end up having one constant...each other.

i tend to agree, but i think that while elaine is integral to the group, she is probably the one that questions her place the most...we see this in the bizarro jerry where she very quickly discards the group for the bizarro group, and only returns when they reject her...i supppose though that although elaine would like to think of herself as above the others (especially poor george who cops a beating from elaine in the later series), she really does share a lot in common with jerry george and kramer ie monumental selfishness and superficiality

elaine is just sooo selfish and only interested in herself. As long as she's going well with her job/guy, she couldnt care less about anyone else. She get sooooo OTT and giddy and excited when anything happens for her and sooo upset when anything goes wrong for her.

And she's such a total and utter slut.

I dont like elaine, she's horrible.

Now, George is v. selfish too and all that....but I dont know....for some reason, he just rules Smile

Elaine is fake. She seems like someone who cant get the real friends that she wants because she is always putting on a fake facade infront of Jerry and the gang because she knows that they are her life line. She seemingly lost all of her other friends becauseof an arguement about the English Patient. She remarks alot that she needs to get new friends but she never does. SHe is also very intrigued by compliments. Everytime she got one she lost all consciousness and focused on that. She is very vein. She is the most educatred out of the bunch which is why they need her. She transformed from a sweet girl to a bitch through the entire series. Thats why i like her.

Elaine is the Princess of Sluts, the Queen of Confrontation and looks pretty, with a big wall of hair, face like a frying pan. Am I right, kids?

Sheesh, some you guys are pretty hard on poor Elaine.

She's probably the most likable out of all of them, certainly the least selfish and slutty.

An edgy, modern women, not afraid of sex.
Kind of a mix of all three of the male characters.

To be honest, Elaine is there to make up numbers. The groups needs a female, and thats the purpose she serves. Jerry is funny, George is angry, Kramer is zany, Elaine is the 'girl' for all this to bounce off.

She's useful to step in when Jerry and George are talking about dating/relationships, etc. Apart from that, i don't think she really has anything in her personality to base a description on.

This isn't a bad thing however, as it serves the comedy plots well Smile

Gee Craig, that sounds rather "sexist", something Elaine would really take offense too. Why do they have to "bounce off" a girl? I see the foursome as 3 loonies bouncing off the "normal" of them, Jerry. According to your definition, why wouldn't the "bounce off" character be an ethnic guy or a gay guy (not that there's anything wrong with that!)? How about instead of Elaine, a large chimpanzee that wears clothes and speaks in sign language? Rolling Eyes At least we know Elaine is the most intelligent of the group...she's the only one who held down a regular job. But of course, she was the "girl" of the group!

I agree with Craig. It may not sound pretty, but it is the truth. This sitcom needed a woman, and so the stuck in Elaine. She has no character other than having a different man every week (which is neccessary to keeping the comedy situations coming and the plot) and being very selfish and angry - which is just because she needs to have SOME sort of "character" - but George does these two things much better.

Why is everyone saying she's so intelligent? She is like a little bit more than a secretary. Jerry is definately the most intelligent of them - he went to College and is clearly bright, he just chose a life of comedy stand-up as his career.

Does Jerry not have a regular job? Elaine has switched a few times from one psycho-dominating boss to another.

Elaine has less to her than any of the other characters.

Self-absorbed, too independent for a successful relationship...funny and lots of fun as long as things are HER way.

Jimmy is pretty sweet on her. Jimmy's been watching her....she's just Jimmy's type.

Indeed there are many things wrong with her which is why her character ruined the entire show for me unless I skip all her scenes.
