Jerry Seinfeld met Jay Leno when Jerry was 19?

I'm watching a rerun of The Tonight Show, um, tonight, and Jay Leno said he first met Jerry Seinfeld when he Jerry was 19. In this same show Jerry mentions he just turned 50 which is May 2004. So with simple math, does that mean they met in 1973?? I thought Jerry Seinfeld started his career after he graduated Queen's College in 1976. Remember one smart-ass response with a sensible answer, please!
