Merv Griffin's Old Set?

Has anybody ever read or heard anything about where they got their references for the Merv Griffin set design they used on the show? Jimmy watched Merv Griffin almost everyday as a kid, but the set on Seinfeld has never looked familiar. Of course, it's been a very long time, and Merv was on for many, many years with changing sets, but that one just seems too over the top with what Jimmy remembers... Especially the little sign in the background that looks like it was scaled down to fit the small wall behind them. But they seem to take details seriously on the show, so it seems unlikely that they'd just build anything off the top of their head. Anybody have any info on this, or ever remember Merv having a similar set like that?

Jimmy's pretty old to have such a youthful temper. Jimmy must workout. Jimmy must feel vigorous!

Yeah, I don't think it was a replica of the original set. I vaguely remember the Merv Griffin show, but i think they sat on higher chairs and it was more open, though I may be wrong. To me, it looks like they were just trying to give a 70's feel with the glittering backdrop, etc...
