They never said. He was always just "Newman". FYI---Cher's real name is Cherilyn Sarkisian LaPierre.

I used to think it was Norman, but I've concluded that the farmer's daughter probably just garbled the name Newman...

Here's another Seinfeld error. In the episode with Keith Hernandez, Newman claims that Hernandez made an error on June 14, 1987 and the Mets lost to the Phillies. However, in actuality the Mets beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 in Pittsburgh on June 14, 1987.

It's TV. Certain liberties are allowed. What does reflect reality, though, is that the Pirates and Phillies still suck. And now so do the Mets, for that matter.

I dug up this (kind of) old thread because I read in an episode guide just now that the Farmer's daughter calling Newman "Norman" was actually the actress's mistake. They kept it anyway because it's funny.

i must say, watchin' Wayne knight on the DVD commentaries, he's got into shape a bit hasn't he! It's almost like he's not the NEWMAN! we all know and love. I guess he must have actually found some non-fat yoghurt. Stay out of this one Mr. Gulliani!!!

He needed to get into shape...
"In 1993 a Seinfeld scene in which his character ran through a field left the actor gasping for breath. The doctor who examined Knight soon after “read me the riot act,” he says. “He basically told me, ‘You’re going to die.’”

Oops...i Just realised I ripped Stan off with my "Cher" line. Sorry 'bout that. Even though I've been saying "Cher" since the 5th grade and i've never looked back.

Gendison, I remember when George used that line "...and I've never looked back" something happened suddenly that caused him to glance back. Cracked me up. I've forgotten the context of that scene, however...

Hmmm... I can picture in my mind's eye George making that comment and then immediately glancing back... can't recall which episode however...

It is on the Subway...he's talking to the woman (who is going to rob him) about working in stocks. He says he's never looked back then the train whistle blows and he looks back.

Kinda like: "I don't want hope. Hope is killing me. My dream is to become
hopeless. When you're hopeless, you don't care, and when you don't care, that
indifference makes you attractive."
And then he follows by replying to Jerry "It's my only hope"
