gs: Lawrence Tierney (Alton Benes) Frantz Turner (Salesman) Susanne Spoke (Customer) Harry Hart-Browne (Manager)
Jerry buys a real expensive new suede jacket with a colorful inner lining. George has a song from Les Miserables that he just can't get out of his mind. Kramer is supposed pickup a magician friend's doves, and needs someone to help him for two minutes; Elaine takes on the job. Kramer promises she'll get "a lift" to the hotel where Jerry and George are meeting her and her father, Alton Benes, an author cut from Hemingway cloth. Jerry and George suffer while waiting with Elaine's father. When it begins to snow, Jerry turns his new jacket inside out, to protect it, but Alton Benes doesn't want to be seen on the street with him.

Why oh why did they never bring Alton Benes back? Those bastards!
Does it get better than "Pipe down, chorus boy"
or ( and make sure to use his voice in your head as you read this )
ALTON: Looks like rain.
GEORGE: (Perks up) I know, I know, that's what they said.
ALTON: Who said?
GEORGE: The weather guy, Dr. Waldo.
ALTON: I don't need anybody to tell me it's gonna rain.
GEORGE: No, of course not. I didn't..
ALTON: All I have to do is stick my head out the window. (Waiter shows up with the drinks) Which one's suppose to be the funny guy?
GEORGE: (Pointing at Jerry) Oh, he's the comedian.
JERRY: I'm just a regular person.
GEORGE: No, no. He's just being modest.
ALTON: We had a funny guy with us in Korea. A tailgunner. They blew his brains out all over the Pacific. (Long pause) There's nothing funny about that

Yes I agree, Alton Benes was a trip:
ALTON: "We had a funny guy with us in Korea. A tailgunner. They blew his brains out all over the Pacific. There's nothing funny about that."

I wonder if those doves Kramer is picking up are the same doves in the later Miss Rhode Island episode.
Also, that song...it always gets stuck in my head after this ep. (power of suggestion) |

Why would they be the same doves? Are there only 15 doves in the whole world?
I wonder if every dog (the one Jerry was stuck taking care of, the one that kept Elaine awake, the one(s) that were chasing Elaine down the street, etc...) are all the same dog. |

Did anyone notice in this episode right before they go out the door that George has his glasses on, then off as he puts on his coat? Am I the only one who notices this?

Did anyone ever notice that one episode where Elaine has her coat on outdoors, but then later, indoors, she has it off? Is Jimmy the only one who noticed this?
This may sound like a long shot, but maybe..... just maybe...... George would decide to remove his glasses before putting his coat on.

Hey, cut James some slack. I saw the same episode and what he saw was poor editing in the first year episode. Happens in some of the later years as well. George is putting his coat on to leave. He looks at Jerry and has no glasses. The cut to walking out the door and he has the glasses back on.
PS Elaine kept her coat on in "The Outing" through the entire episode. So long shot... your wrong! |

How long does it take to remove, or put on glasses? Who's to say how much time is passed between two edited scenes? YOU? The gang must have flown to India in five minutes according to your interpretations.
...and who mentioned anything about The Outing?
You're wrong... sorry to embarrass you, but in the future, maybe you'll "think" before you reply. Have a great day. |

"Why oh why did they never bring Alton Benes back? Those bastards!"
Because, the guy who played him, Maura Tierny's(ER) father I think, really freaked the cast out. He apparently came at Jerry with a knife making the screeching violin sounds from "Psyco". I read that he really freaked them out, not just with that. My info came from the TVGuide from a few weeks ago with the Seinfeld cast on the front, it had a little thingy about him. |

He was a great character, but the way he sang the "Les Miserables" song at the end, sort of leaves the impression that he's not as mean and as tough as we thought. To come back and be a jerk after that wouldn't really work in Jimmy's opinion. It's like Batman being see without his mask. It was all over for Alton's character at that moment. |

I always loved this part:
ALTON: Wait a minute. What the hell do you call this?
JERRY: Oh, I turned my jacket inside out.
ALTON: Well, you look like a damn fool!
JERRY: (Like a child) Well, it's a new suede jacket. It might get ruined.
ALTON: Well, you're not going to walk down the street with my and my daughter dressed like that! That's for damn sure.
