The 'Mihoshi Special' and three OAVs play like extended versions of the fantasies Washu's Dimensional Cause and Effect Controller produced in Tenchi Universe. The familiar characters take unlikely roles in bubble-brained Mihoshi's account of her early career, which introduces Sasami's alter-ego, Magical Girl Pretty Sammy. In the three OAVs, Tenchi is Sasami's older brother; their karaoke-crazed mother owns a music store where Mihoshi and Kiyone work. Tsunami is the favored candidate for Queen of the magical realm of Juraihelm, but she needs a representative on Earth to win additional points--and makes Sasami her agent as Pretty Sammy. The second of these spoofs of the 'Magical Girl' genre is the funniest: Bill Gates-like villain Bif Standard attempts to conquer the world with (rather slow) software. These shows rank as the lightest entries in the popular Tenchi continuity. (Rated 13 and older: violence, alcohol use, brief nudity, minor profanity, mild risqué humor) --Charles Solomon
