Description:
High school teachers Jill Swinburne (Barbara Flynn) and Trevor Chaplin (James Bolam) are your average everyday couple. Except that they're not married. Except they refer to their six-month-old son as 'First-Born' because they haven't yet democratically chosen a name. Except that they seem to attract quirky characters with good hearts and misplaced morals.

Alan Plater's third, offbeat comedy thriller, 'The Biederbecke Connection,' is a four-episode colorful romp through Jill and Trevor's lives. They're adjusting to family life, complete with bedtime stories of Duke Ellington. They're also innocently harboring a mysterious refugee who speaks no English. Ivan (Patrick Drury) and Trevor quickly form a 'Beiderbecke Connection' when they learn of their shared passion for Bix Beiderbecke, the legendary white jazz musician of the 1920s. Ivan is more than a jazz freak. He's an ex-con with a past -- and a present. Seems he loves playing games with other people's money. If Ivan wins this game, he'll single-handedly turn the world's currency into chaos. The police must stop him, but first they have to find him.

Frank Ricotti, composer and arranger of the original music for the 'Beiderbecke' series, performs in a special guest appearance in episode 2.
