The U.S. Navy's carrier battle groups take off from their home base on the East or West Coasts of the United States, and head into open water and to distant seas. These aircraft carrier battle groups are the center of America's military might, power, and influence.

This emotionally charged film shows the human side of the United States Navy, through the lives of Navy men and their families. The program captures their last few days on shore and follows them out to sea during the first few trying days aboard the Kennedy and one of its escort ships, the guided missile frigate, USS Harry E. Yarnell, just as the Kennedy and its battle group departed for deployment off the coast of Lebanon, where United States Marines were then stationed.

Exciting flight deck operations (including a 'controlled crash') are mixed with the unique opportunity to go below the flight deck and see a virtual city in itself, one that offers the 2,600 sailors everything they will need during their eight months at sea.
