Amazon.com Product Description:
The Tanita BC533 Glass Innerscan Body Composition Monitor is one of the most comprehensive body monitors on the market today that's designed for home use. Using advanced Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA) technology that was previously available only to medical professionals, health clubs and professional athletes,

Monitoring features help you keep tabs on your body composition and health. View larger.

There is more to healthy dieting than weight loss alone. Body fat percentage measurements are also important indicators of good health. View larger.
this monitor analyzes a full range of body measurements, including weight, body fat percentage, body water percentage, metabolic age, physique rating, visceral fat, muscle mass, and bone mass. It's a mouthful of measurements, but what it means is that with the Tanita BC533, you now have the unprecedented ability to monitor your body and the effects of your diet and fitness routines, comfortably and affordably in the convenience of your own home.

With the Tanita BC533 up to four unique users can benefit. Simply supply your gender, age, height and weight into the memory, step on the scale, and the monitor does the rest. The results are analyzed according to each user's information, and the result -- displayed in the monitor's 2.25-inch LCD screen -- is the one of the most comprehensive at-home readings you can get.

This monitor, which is about the same size as a typical bathroom scale, is ideal for anyone who is serious about monitoring their health and fitness. Knowing your body fat percentage -- the amount of body fat as a proportion of your body weight -- is essential if you want to create a diet and exercise plan that helps reduce the risk of certain conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Body water percentage is the total amount of fluid in your body expressed as a percentage of your total weight. Maintaining a healthy body water percentage ensures that your body functions efficiently. The metabolic age level is related to your body's metabolic rate and helps you maintain the daily minimum level of energy or calories your body requires when resting or sleeping to function effectively. Even though your total body weight might not change drastically over time, your muscle mass and body fat levels may be changing. Keeping tabs on them can help you stay at a lower risk of certain diseases. And knowing your levels of visceral fat -- the fat in the abdominal cavity and surrounding the vital organs -- can help you keep heart disease and high blood pressure at bay, and may delay the onset of type two diabetes. In short, this monitor gives you essential information and greater control as you work to stay healthy and live a more active, vital life.

Operating on four AA batteries (included), the Tanita BC533 is intended for use by persons up to 330 pounds and is backed by Tanita's 10-year warranty.

Note: Pregnant women should not use this monitor, and if you have a pacemaker or other internal electronic medical device, you should not use the body fat reading feature.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Adults only!
Seems O.K. Have used it a few times. Beware if you want to keep this in your bathroom as your everyday scale because exposing it to high humidity affects its operation. Also do not buy this if you are going to make it available to children because the glass platform can break if it is misused. Good product for adults, but not good for kids.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Sometimes the truth hurts...
I'm 6' tall and 199 lbs. Comparing me to the sea of obesity that is modern America, friends and family always say "You're not fat". Government and insurance company tables, however, say that a 6' tall man should weigh between 150 and 185 lbs. depending on frame size. I bought this scale to replace a 10-year-old Tanita that has always had an annoyingly flaky memory. The new scale is consistent in weight measurement with the old one, to within about 0.5 lbs. Unlike the old scale, this one presents a lot more information including the fact that I am "medium frame obese", i.e., with a moderate amount of muscle but an excessive quantity of fat. Sometimes the government is right after all.

The scale gives dramatically different readings at night or first thing in the morning. Overnight I shed almost 10 lbs. of muscle and gained 3 percent in body fat. So the best that one can hope for with the body composition measurements is consistency, not accuracy (in fairness the manufacturer does explain that there is an ideal time of day to measure oneself if accuracy is desired, but I'm on the Steve Ward Diet and need to weigh myself first thing in the morning in order to decide how much food to eat during the day).

Maybe the billions of dollars that the TSA is spending on body scanners for airports will give us more accurate measurements every time we pass through airport security. For a device that costs less than $100 and touches one's body only at the feet, I think the Tanita does a pretty good job.

I will sign off like Eric Cartman... not fat, just big-boned.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Well worth the money!
This is a great scale. Excellent for tracking progress. Well worth the money!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - This Scale is an asset over years to monitor your health status.
I purchased this scale in 2006 prior to surgery that was going to screw titanium screws into my pelvis. Since my investigation of the failure rate on this operation depended on a healthy bone mass, so the threads would not strip and fail, I wanted to have a confidence level regarding my bone mass. Since this scale gave me a normal rating for my bone mass, its information was worth the price of the scale just for my peace of mind. Making an adjustment each year for my age, and following a healthy life style regarding diet and exercise, this scale has done a consistent measure of all the factors the scale provides. It's results have been verified by a "Life Line Screening" Bone Mineral Density (BMD) Osteoporosis test recently and by the success of the 2006 operation. Because of the consistency of results for over three years now, and verification by related medical authority, I consider this scale to be an excellent addition to my own yearly health monitoring.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Cool but Not Durable - Not worth 100+ bucks
We purchsed this item about 18 months ago and while we did like the features and look of the product, the durability was a dissapointment.

After about a year, the product stopped working intermittently.
We tried changing batteries and all that stuff but it would still just stop working for days at a time and come back to life without any rhyme or reason. After going through that for about 6 months (I'm a very patient person) I finally had enough and launched it today.

For 100+ bucks I expect more, and would not purchase this product again.
