Each episode focuses on one of up to 150 canine breeds. In each episode we will select one or two dogs that serve as our main guides through the colorful world of purebreds. Through interviews with owners, trainers, judges, breeders and veterinarians, we will explore the development of a 'top dog'. In this episode of Breed All About It we meet the oldest known purebred dog - the Greyhound. Today's Greyhound can be recognized in early artistic rendering, on temple walls and the Bible! Cynthia Branigan, our Greyhound historian and author of 'The Reign of the Greyhound', tells us about Greyhounds in Ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece! Melanie Steele and her husband, Jack, are mainly concerned with their present day Greyhounds. Melanie and Jack got their first Greyhound puppy five years ago and now they have four! One of their Greyhounds, Belle, will be attending the National Greyhound Specialty Show. Another look at today's Greyhound takes us to Derby Lane in St. Petersburg, Florida. Here we see the racing side of this beautiful hound. John Silipelli takes us through the kennels and 'behind the scenes' as we view our competitors mealtime, pre-race preparation, race procedures, and post race relaxation and rewards.
