Military Documentary: Told from the point of view of the crew of the aircraft carrier, highlights functions and duties of The Fighting Lady, pseudonym for the Yorktown, and crew activities. Maps illustrate movement of Pacific Fleet and its engagement with the Japanese in 1943 and 1944. A-24 Dauntlesses, TBF Avengers, Hellcats and A-25, SB2C and SBF Helldivers fly out to the carrier. Skipper reproofs flight deck crew's performance. Diagram of carrier and account of hangar deck. Sailors perform housekeeping and military tasks. Follows August 30, 1943, strafing and bombing mission over, Japanese-held Marcus Island from preparation on carrier to debriefing. Early 1944, U.S. forces take Kwajalein Island, Marshall Islands, and Truk Islands, Caroline Islands, through air assaults and troop landings; Mitsubishi Zero-Sens (Zekes) engage U.S. Navy assault force. Ship squadron returns to Marshall Islands for repairs, munitions, and rest and recreation. En route to battle area, Fighting Lady encounters and downs Japanese reconnaissance plane. On eve of battle, sailors attend church services; prior to U.S. assault, Japanese attack U.S. squadron and U.S. planes take off for Marianas and Guam Islands. U.S. takes Tinian Island, Marianas Islands. Japanese and U.S. task forces engage in Philippine Sea. Planes engage in dog fight while ships perform evasive maneuvers. U.S. casualties buried at sea.
