What's The Deal With "Cosmo"?

Does anyone know how Kramer was assigned the first name of Cosmo?

Was it ever talked about on the talk-show circuit or in any magazine articles? Is it mentioned in any of the DVD's?

I have a theory about the first name (which I will post later) but I would first like to hear from the experts on the subject.

I think Larry David just came up with it, and it has no particular meaning or story behind it. I have a vague recollection of this being mentioned in the featurette about Kramer in one of the DVD volumes.

That was pretty much what I figured the story would be, too. Until last night.

There was a story on the news here in L.A. last night about diamonds and their ratings and the featured jeweler for the story was none other than one COSMO Altobelli! I was *stunned*!!

This guy's business is in Toluca Lake, CA. Just a few scant minutes from the Warner lot in Studio City.

So then I wondered if Kramer's first name was "discovered" after someone connected with the show paid a visit to the store and learned of the jeweler's first name.

Sounds just zany enough for Larry, Jerry or Michael to have done, doncha think??

Perhaps I'll call this Cosmo guy tomorrow and ask if he ever did business with anyone from the show. Laughing

Actually the Warner lot is also in Toluca Lake, though still a few minutes the jewelry store.

They're both near the 134. Do you know where that is? Do you know where the 170 is? Do you know where the 101 is?

I should take a picture of that pay phone Jerry and George were using on Ventura Blvd. Laughing

It was a guy who lived in Larry David's apartment building, in fact, the same building in which the real Kramer lived as well...

Perhaps if that story was verifiable. Otherwise I'm afraid I can't accept your testimony. Laughing

Does anyone have any idea how Jerry got the name Jerry? I'm sure there's a story that's GOT to be true behind it.
It's just a name for the love of God, man.

I think Jerry rhymed with Kal's favorite female body part.

Yes, Gendison, "Cosmo" *is* just a name but c'mon, it's not just *any* name (despite what Jimmy says about its popularity in Italy).

I mean the more you learn about the inside stuff about the show through the dvd commentaries, you want to hear even more about it- like how Kramer got his first name!

At any rate, I thought there could have been a connection with the gemologist. You've got to admit that, with respect to degrees of coincidences, it's a pretty big one! Wink
